These were my father’s tools. I miss him, but I think about him when I use them. The saw still cuts pretty well, though it probably could stand to be sharpened. I like that it is fancier than it needs to be. A modern saw from Home Depot has a high impact plastic handle that can survive a fall from a ten story building, but it doesn’t have some wheaty stuff engraved on the handle. Wood is good. The hammer is wrapped in something like shellacked tape, which again is nicer than a fiberglass handle. The scratch awl is also made from genuine wood.

I should’ve been clearer that the fiberglass lantern I wrote about for CRAFT 02 is made from corrugated plastic roofing… here’s a photo that CRAFT didn’t use, cutting a 9-1/2" wide strip off the sheet to roll up into a lantern.
My brother, who keeps his outside on the patio, says that theirs seems to blow around in the wind pretty easily. So maybe a good modification would be to add some extra weight to the candle platform somehow?
P.S. it was Chippets‘ porch that inspired this–and thanks for lending the camera to shoot the construction photos too!
