Question by bwq_hunter: how to fix my laser sailboat’s soft spots on the fiberglass deck?
i have a laser sailboat, and i need the strengthen the deck, it has 3 soft spots on the deck, and all 3 are parallel to each other, both of the sitting areas and the foot area, i need them fixed soon be for it is to late.

i was thinking of sanding it down and instead of re-fiberglassing it i was thinking of use carbon fiber instead
there is no wood in a laser sailboat, i hav check old hulls and decks, it only gets soft wen i go sailing, but if i dont take it, it is as hard as a rock

Best answer:

Answer by obx_surf_lover
Sounds like you have bad core in your deck. You want to take a hammer and tap LIGHTLY to find an outline of the area you need to repair..try to keep the area as small as possible. Once you have done that, take a saw and set the depth at no more than 1/4 inch at first to cut through the fiberglass skin. Pull the skin off and you will see the core material (usually wood or foam). Dig out the bad core. You will need a grinder or sander (with at least 36 grit paper) to clean the surface where the core was and prepare it for the new core. Cut a piece of new core (preferably marine grade plywood) that is thick enough to leave enough room for roughly 2 layers of fiberglass mat. Take some fiberglass resin and thicken it with aerosil or cabosil (thickening agents) and make a paste thats about as think as mayonnaise. This will be your glue. Mix some hardener into it as directed on the resin container and put a nice thick layer on the surface where the old core was. Put the new piece in and put weights on it so its down tight. I suggest letting it sit 24 hrs. After it cures, take a grinder and bevel the outside edge of the hole about 1 inch all the way around so you have a smooth surface to lay the glass to. Your area should now be ready for glass. Cut your glass starting with a size that will just cover the new wood, then a piece that covers the entire area you ground as well. If you want you can cut a piece that is an in between size. Now mix some resin and wet out the smallest piece first and lay in on the core. Then do the same with the next biggest piece and work your way out until you build it up level…you will want a fiberglass roller to make it as smooth as possible. Once that cures, get a sander and sand it as smooth as you can get it (use bondo for fairing if necessary). Now your spot is repaired and ready for the finish coat. I would recommend a professional to match your boat with gelcoat and finish it if you want it perfect. But just replacing the core yourself will save you a chunk of money.

**As far as carbon fiber goes, its not made to be applied like regular fiberglass and its made more for fabrication than repairs.**

Question by champ: What type of window is a better value: vinyl, fiberglass/fiberglass clad wood, wood, or aluminum clad wood?
I am not impressed with vinyl, but notice it being used quite often. I would rather pay for something based on value. I have no problem paying more for wood, fiberglass, or Aluminum clad wood if they hold up better. Maybe vinyl is o.k. but my experience is plastics are usually over rated. What are your experiences with these products. Are there any customers that have had these products for a long time with positve or negative results? Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by taro
aluminum doesnt depreciate on value, but it isnt as luxurious as wood…so i’d go with wood…but if you are in a tropical country ..wood could be bad, due to termites.

I especially need a new cab shell, and various other body side panels. I know of a website that GM endorses, that manufactors aftermarket fiberglass cab shells for much older model year Chevy p/u trucks. It is my most sincere hope to find a simular website endorsed by Ford Motor Company. Please help.
